Bonnie Dundee Restoration Project

We were delighted to welcome from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway in June 2016, the Kerr Stuart locomotive ‘Bonnie Dundee’.

Her Story So Far

Works Number 720, and built in 1901, ‘Bonnie Dundee’ began life at Dundee Gas Commissioners in Scotland, operating as a 0-4-0WT. Built to 2 foot gauge.

Departing in 1959 for a short career at Caledon Shipbuilding, Dundee, Tayside before being purchased by the late Ian Fraser of Arbroath for preservation.

She was transferred to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway in 1976 where restoration began and completed in 1981 as a 0-4-2WT for service. As part of this process, she was regauged to 15 inch gauge.

In 1996, the locomotive was rebuilt in its current tender form before entering service with visits to Cleethorpes and Windmill Farm Railway.

Journey to Cleethorpes

With no sign of restoration planned at Ravenglass, CCLR took the opportunity to provide a home and chance of restoration. She was moved to Cleethorpes on the 13th of June 2016.

Bonnie Dundee strikes the balance with power, having the capacity to haul our maximum length trains of six carriages, yet still having spare to go on if required.

The benefit of a large cab also means the locomotive can take part in driver experiences on the railway.

Her Return to Steam

We need your help. On inspection of Bonnie Dundee when she arrived in Cleethorpes, it became clear to us that considerable work was required to return her to serviceable condition. This includes boiler repairs, new valve gear, bearings and modifications to suit running on our railway.

Work does not come easy and we are now turning to admirers of this fine locomotive to support its restoration.

The current plan is for Bonnie Dundee to return to steam later this year, but this will not happen without your help!

A reward scheme has been set for those to give their support to this worthy project, as outlined below.
